NORWEGIAN GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2008-2009
(RESEARCH PROGRAMME)

Typed Applications
(complete in all respect) in duplicate
in the prescribed format are invited from Indian
nationals for nomination of 3 Norwegian Government
Scholarship for 2008-2009. The Government
scholarships are designed to promote cooperation and
interaction between Norwegian and foreign students /
researchers and institutions of higher learning and
research of both countries. The Scholarships are
intended to finance a temporary stay, and not a
complete education in Norway. Therefore the
Scholarships is for a period ranging from one to ten
months (i.e. maximum of one academic year). The
Scholarship Pool is tenable at public universities,
research institutions, colleges and other institutions
at university level in Norway. The subject fields
are: -

of Natural Resources and Sustainable Agriculture.
2. Electrical
Power Engineering
3.
Development Studies,
Specializing in Geography
4. Hydropower
Development
5.
Petroleum Engineering
and Petroleum Geoscience
6.
International
Fisheries Management
7. Special
Needs Education
1.
Requirements
: Applicants should :-
-
Hold a minimum of a
Bachelor’s degree in the relevant subject field with
60% or more marks.
-
Not to exceed 40
years of age as on 01.01.2008.
-
Enclose a letter of
invitation from a host institution in
Norway where they wish to study or carry out research.
-
Enclose a
description of the project/purpose of the planned
study/research stay in Norway.
-
Enclose a recent letter of invitation
from
(or
on behalf of
)a
member of the scientific staff of a Norwegian host
institution- valid for the planned study/research
stay in Norway(
www.studyinnorway.no)
-
Enclose a recent
letter of recommendation from home institution with
relevance to the planned study/research stay in
Norway.
-
Have good working knowledge of
English or Norwegian(Danish/
Swedish)
-
Focus the
professional programme around one host institution.
2.
Duration :
Scholarships can be granted from one
(1) to ten
(10)
months in the academic year. The autumn term runs
from mid-August to mid-December and the spring terms
from mid-January to mid-June. Requests for an
extension of the scholarship for
(part of
) the next academic year will be regarded as a new application and must
be directed through the home country authorities by
the next application deadline.
3.
Value : Scholarship rates are :-
-
NOK 8,500 ($ 1,000)
per month for candidates who hold a Bachelor’s or
Master’s degree.
-
NOK 11,500 ($1,400)
per month for Ph.D. students or post does.
-
In addition,
depending on the length of the stay, an extra NOK
7,000-10,000 ($ 900-1,300) will be granted to cover
initial expenses. It is not the intention that a
scholarship shall provide for family support.
Scholarship holders will have access to a reasonably
priced room at a hall of residence.
The Norwegian
Scholarship authorities do not provide candidates
travel to and fro costs (between India & Norway).
The candidates have to bear the expenses themselves.
Note
:
Candidates with 60% marks and above at the minimum
qualifying level are eligible. Candidates having 60%
or more marks at higher level of studies but having
less than 60% marks at the minimum qualifying level
will not be considered. Where grades are mentioned
candidates must indicate the conversion formula
adopted by the University/Institution.

Each application must consist of the following for
documents in English
:

Letter of
recommendation from the home institution.
-
Letter of
invitation from a Norwegian host institution in
Norway.
-
List of relevant
publications (if applicable).
5.
The following must be attached with the application
Fellowships/ Scholarships:
1. i)
a) Attested copies of all
degrees/diplomas/certificates etc.
b) Attested
copies of the certificates certifying date of birth.
c) Attested
copies of marks sheets of the qualifying examination.
d) No
Objection Certificate from the employer, if employed.
e) A recent
passport size photograph of candidate to be affixed on
the prescribed application form.
ii).
Candidates with equivalent foreign degree will also be
considered.
iii).
Candidates should have sufficient knowledge of India
and the donor country.
iv). Candidates
must furnish a clear and precise programme of
study/research.
v).
Applications in the subject fields other than those
specified above will not be considered.
2. Candidates
who have already been abroad for
study/specialization/training for more than 6 months
on a scholarship or at their own are eligible to apply
only if they have been in India for atleast 2
consecutive years after their return from abroad.
However, the scholars who have proceeded under the
scheme of Scholarships for Study Abroad before 1991
have to complete 5 years stay in India on their return
from abroad before applying for the scholarship.
3. Selected
candidates will be required to execute an undertaking
on a non-judicial stamp paper of Rs.10/- with
Government of India.
4. Mere
fulfillment of minimum requirements as laid down in
the advertisement does not qualify a candidate for
interview.
5. While
indicating the period of past experience and stay
abroad candidates should mention the specific dates.
6.
Applications in subject fields other than those
specified in the advertisement will not be considered.
7. Candidates
who do not possess the essential qualifications need
not apply.
8. Incomplete
applications and applications received late after the
stipulated date will not be considered and no
correspondence will be entertained in this regard.
9. Documents
submitted alongwith the applications will not be
returned. Hence, candidates are advised to send only
attested copies of the certificates.
10. In case no
interview letter is received by a candidate who has
applied in response to our advertisement, it may be
presumed that he/she has not been selected. No
correspondence will be entertained in this regard.
11.
The decision of the
Selection Committee shall be final. NO REPRESENTATIONS
IN THIS REGARD WILL BE ENTERTAINED.
13. Mere
nomination of a candidate by Government of India does
not guarantee final selection or placement in the
donor country. The donor country will make its own
selection from among the nominees recommended.
14. Candidates
would apply for the above scholarship on a plain paper
with a recent passport size photograph, furnishing the
details/particulars indicated in the accompanying
format to the Section Officer, Ministry of Human
Resource Development (Department of Higher Education)

by 31st December, 2007
(5.30 P.M.). Application received thereafter will
not be considered. Application can also be downloaded
from the Department’s website
www.education.nic.in
On line applications may be accepted provided hard
copy of the application alongwith enclosures (attested
copies of certificates, marks-sheet etc.) reach the
Ministry within 5 days after the last date.
